Categories in Periodix-Planner allow you to organize and track your time investments across different areas of your life.

๐ŸŽฏ Overviewโ€‹

Categories are the foundation of the time budgeting system. They represent different areas where you invest your time:

  • Work - Professional activities
  • Health - Exercise, wellness, self-care
  • Learning - Education, skill development
  • Relationships - Family, friends, social activities
  • Personal Projects - Hobbies, creative pursuits

โœจ Automatic Discoveryโ€‹

No manual category creation needed! Categories are automatically detected and registered when you use them in your periodic notes.

How It Worksโ€‹

  1. Write a Time Allocation: Add any category name in your time budget code fence
    โ€‹```periodic-planner
    NewCategory: 5
    โ€‹```
  2. Instant Registration: CategoryTracker detects it and adds it to settings automatically with a default color
  3. Real-Time Tracking: Usage statistics update as you work across all notes
  4. Automatic Cleanup: Remove all instances of a category, and it's automatically removed from settings

Exampleโ€‹

When you create a time budget in any periodic note:

โ€‹```periodic-planner
Work: 40
Health: 10
Learning: 5
โ€‹```

The categories "Work", "Health", and "Learning" automatically appear in Settings โ†’ Categories with default colors - no manual setup required!

Create Categories in the Allocation Editorโ€‹

You can also create categories on-the-fly in the allocation editor:

  1. Open the allocation editor in any note
  2. Click "+ Create new category"
  3. Enter the category name
  4. Assign hours to it
  5. Save - the category is instantly registered with a default color

Categories work seamlessly across:
